Catering Captain

POSITION: Catering Captain
DEPARTMENT: Savor….Food & Beverage
REPORTS TO: Catering Manager
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt Hourly

SMG, the leader in privately managed public assembly facilities has excellent and immediate openings for Catering Captains at the Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Catering Captain reports to the Catering Manager and oversees all Catering Functions to include, coffee breaks, buffets, plated and reception events; any and all functions serving any food & beverage items.  Also to ensure that the assigned events and activities are organized and executed resulting in the complete satisfaction of the guests attending the event.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participates in training of all servers.
  • Assists in maintaining and organizing all banquet equipment, cleanliness, regular inventories and annual maintenance.
  • Must be creative in designing buffets and event décor.
  • Attention to detail and consistency in every aspect of service is a must.
  • Position is very hands-on with extensive interaction with clients and employees.
  • Ensures all signage is properly displayed for each and every event
  • Fulfilling the service per each Banquet Event Orders (BEO), as well as Catering Department Service Standards.
  • Daily communication with Catering Manager and Catering Staff. Frequent contact with Event Services Department staff, The Director of Food & Beverage, Executive Chef, Culinary Team and other Arena employees.
  • Ensuring all relevant and applicable paperwork is filled out correctly.
  • Reports to functions and events prior to serving staff to help organize and plan execution of event.
  • Assigning duties to banquet staff, supporting banquet captains and other staff to specific job responsibilities and events/functions.
  • Assists in the preparation of the area or room in its entirety for a function or event, prior to the guest’s arrival.
  • Ensures space is cleaned after event and equipment is cleaned and stored properly.
  • Execute event from beginning to end.
  • Act as Manager on duty in absence of Catering Manager during events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Fast paced and able to multi-task with a strong recall memory in order to achieve and maintain high levels of guest activity.
  • Positive and able to motivate all staff to offer hospitality service which exceeds guests’ expectations.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays as well as spur of the moment events.
  • Strong orientation to customer service and ability to work with other staff members in the facility.
  • Able to work independently, as well as a team player.
  • Ability to undertake and complete multiple tasks.
  • Able to be creative with buffet presentations, and maintain a quality product.
  • Knowledgeable about food safety and basic health code policies and procedures

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and remain stationary for entire length of shift
  • Constant walking, bending, reaching and repetitive motions
  • Ability to perform normal lifting of stock, up to 50 pounds

Environmental Working Conditions

  • May be exposed to variable temperatures, including extreme hold and cold, depending on season
  • May be required to work in confined and/or narrow spaces 

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 6 months to 1 year of service experience in a hotel, full service restaurant, catering facility or club environment preferred
  • Must be at least 19 years of age
  • Experience in a banquet facility servicing meals for large events is preferred.
  • Current Lancaster County Food Handlers Permit, Server/Seller Permit and Responsible Beverage Service Training Certificate.

Guest Services Manager



SMG, the leader in privately managed public assembly facilities, has an excellent and immediate opening for a Guest Services Manager.  Under direct supervision of the Director of Guest Services, maintain a safe and secure environment for patrons by establishing safety policies and procedures; supervising the front of house Event Services and Event Security work force.


  • Recruit, train and supervise Event Staff (ticket takers, ushers, door guards) and Event Security Staff for both indoor and outdoor events.
  • Schedule staff for various types and sizes of events, insuring they are adequately staffed.
  • Develop and implement security policies, protocols and procedures. 
  • Investigate and resolve event-related complaints in a professional manner ensuring customer satisfaction. 
  • Resolve seating issues with the Box Office Manager.
  • Perform various support activities such as discipline, payroll, purchasing supplies, cleaning uniforms, etc.
  • Perform common managerial functions, planning, organizing, communicating, and supervising.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays as needed. 
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


  • Proven experience as events and security manager or similar position 
  • Meet the physical demands of the job.  Able to stand and walk for long periods of time, climb stairs.
  • Must be physically able to assist in the evacuation of others.
  • Knowledge of crowd management and control techniques.
  • Knowledge of public safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of customer services practices.
  • Handle conflict, make commons sense decisions and exercise proper action during high tension and stressful situations. 
  • Follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively with others in both oral and written form.
  • Work effectively under pressure and/or stringent schedule and produce accurate results.
  • Operate a computer using Windows, Microsoft office and scheduling software.
  • Work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.


  • A high school diploma and 2-3 years customer relations experience. Further education is security administration or similar field will be an asset 
  • Prior supervisory experience required.
