Vance Joy with Young Rising Sons

UNL Spring Concert Presented by UPC

April 23, 2015

About The Event

Vance Joy and Young Rising Sons will grace the stage at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Thursday, April 23 at 8:00 p.m. for the annual University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Spring Concert sponsored by the University Program Council (UPC).

James Keogh, better known as Vance Joy, is an Australian singer-songwriter. Joy graduated from St. Kevin's College, as well as Monash University with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws.  In 2008 and 2009, Joy played for the Coburg Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), winning their best first year player award in 2008. He eventually gave up football to pursue a music career. Joy signed a five-album deal with Atlantic Records in 2013. He released his debut EP God Loves you When You're Dancing in March 2013. His song "Riptide" was voted number 1 on the 2013 Triple J Hottest 100.

Vance Joy released his debut studio album Dream Your Life Away in September 2014. Dream Your Life Away was recorded mainly just outside of Seattle with producer Ryan Hadlock (Lumineers, Gossip, Johnny Flynn) including a handful of songs ("Mess is Mine," "Winds of Change" and "Georgia") being finished off in a tree house on the studio grounds. The album title, Dream Your Life Away, came to him after hearing John Lennon's 1981 classic "Watching the Wheels." Joy said, "He has that line 'People say I'm crazy, dreaming my life away,' and I love that idea. That title feels like a good reflection of my life recently. It's still all totally new to me."

As well as selling out headline tours in Australia, Vance Joy performed at South by Southwest, Glastonbury, Firefly and Boonaroo Festivals before returning to Australia for Spendour In The Grass and back to the United Kingdom, Europe, United States, and Canada for headline tours and V Festival, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands and Osheaga.

Fueled by a fierce chemistry and brother-like camaraderie, Red Bank, New Jersey-based foursome Young Rising Sons deliver anthemic alt-rock that's uplifting and infectious but unshakably honest. As heard on their debut single "High," lead singer/guitarist Andy Tongren, lead guitarist Dylan Scott, bassist Julian Dimagiba, and drummer Steve Patrick give serious depth to their stylish, summery sound through fearless recognition of life's less-than-sunny moments -- a dynamic that inspired SiriusXM Alt Nation and tastemakers across the globe to greet "High" with lavish praise and BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe to name the song his "Next Hype" track upon its release last spring. With Tongren's voice showing a dizzying range and undeniable sweetness, Young Rising Sons' upcoming self-titled debut EP channels that spirit into songs marked by both supremely melodic hooks and a rare soulful intensity.

Founded in 2010, Young Rising Sons came to be when Scott, Dimagiba, and Patrick (all New Jersey natives who had played music together throughout high school) saw Tongren performing an acoustic set at a New York City bar and approached him about singing for their newly formed band. "They asked me to jam with them and everything just clicked right away -- we were friends first and bandmates second," recalls Tongren, who grew up in Ohio and studied music at The New School. Bound by a love of melody-minded songwriters like Tom Petty and high-energy punk bands such as Green Day, Young Rising Sons struggled to find considerable success with their music over the next few years, but continued to push forward with their songwriting and playing. "We were really just going on faith and the fact that we're best friends and wanted to maintain that, regardless of whatever ended up happening with the band," notes Scott.

After playing together for several years, Young Rising Sons have grown into their current sound. “We grew up with The Beatles, The Temptations, and Bruce Springsteen,” says Tongren. “I believe our songs walk the line between avant-garde and pop, blending influence from those acts.”
